The Făgăraș Mountains (Munții Făgăraș) have been among the best-known and most popular hiking areas in Romania since the late 19th century. The Făgăraș Mountains are the highest in the Romanian Carpathians: The Moldoveanu Peak rises to 2,544 m. The main ridge, stretching over 50 km, boasts a total of eight peaks over 2,500 m high. At the same time, there are over 50 glacial lakes here, the largest of which is Lake Balea (Lacul Bâlea) at approximately 4.6 hectares.
