The Retezat Mountains rise between two large valleys, Petrosani and Hateg, and are divided into two parts: The Greater Retezat (Retezatul Mare) is the most significant part of the massif and features the highest peaks—Peleaga (2,509 m), Păpuşa (2,508 m), Retezat (2,485 m), Bucura (2,433 m), and Judele (2,398 m), while the Small Retezat (Retezatul Mic) is more pristine than the Great Retezat.
It is said that Retezat is a mountain with blue eyes, as the sky is reflected in no fewer than 80 lakes. In Retezat, you can see the largest glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians—Lake Bucura (nearly 9 hectares in size)—and the deepest lake—Lake Zanoaga (29 m deep).
